JDE Global was contacted with an urgent project request in early 2018 by a major international brand in the tech and communication industry.

A well-established company in the translation space, JDE Global was used to handling Chinese to English translations. The tight deadline and nature of the work presented a challenge for translators at JDE Global. On the client’s side, billions of dollars were at stake in a legal battle that was going on between them and a business partner. To help their case, they needed thousands of pages of Chinese translated into English, as requested by a regulatory body in the United States.

In March 2018, the team at JDE Global got right to work, translating nearly 1.5 million words from simplified Chinese into American English. The team of professional translators worked on the project and completed it before to the client’s desired turnaround time. The use of CAT ensured that language was consistent throughout all of the documents. The project was completed in April 2018, and the client was able to turn it in to the regulatory body before their deadline. In the end, the client achieved a satisfactory outcome as a result of being able to provide English translations of the documents involved.

At JDE Global challenges are welcomed. They allow for processes to be tested and refined, and employees are able demonstrate their abilities to produce top-notch work, even on short deadlines. The major challenge that this project presented was the massive amount of text coupled with a short turnaround time of just two months. The many Excel files contained large trunks of text, which were difficult to manage due to the file size. Additionally, due to the nature of the translation, there needed to be careful attention to ensure there was consistency throughout, even with multiple translators working on the project simultaneously.

The solution that the project managers decided upon using was to split the file into smaller, more manageable ones. From there, the text was placed in an online Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) application. This allowed for time savings by leverage. Multiple linguists were able to work on the project concurrently, while keeping consistency in the language. Consistency of phrases and word choice is especially important with legal document translation. One wrong word choice, that could be interpreted in multiple ways, can mean the difference between winning or losing a legal battle.

When a wealthy individual invests a large sum of his wealth, earned from the finance sector, he expects to see a return. They believe it will bring back profits and are eager to see their money grow.

What they do not expect is for that money to go missing. Or for the investment firm to deny any involvement from this individual. Such is the case for a businessman whose investment in a newer private equity firm has virtually vanished. The attorneys hired to handle this case knew they would need lots of content translated, so they sought out JDE Global to handle the project because they are known for being able to take on complex projects and complete them accurately and on time.

Since the private equity firm operates in multiple countries, when the case went to court, millions of words of documents related the case needed to be translated between English, simplified Chinese, and traditional Chinese.

The translation team had to translate a variety of written and audio content, including WeChat text messages, WeChat voice messages, emails, in various formats. Other documents included contracts, court reports, news clips, and statements to the arbitration tribunal. Besides translation, they needed to do back-translation, and transcriptions. Another challenge was getting them edited and formatted correctly and clearly. Since the scope and nature of the project was so large, the work needed to be done quickly and with precision. The team at JDE Global employed technologies such as Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) to ensure consistency and accuracy throughout the project.

This technology allows multiple linguists to work at the same time, saving time while still maintaining a high level of integrity within the content.

Over the span of more than a year, lasting between 2017 and 2018, the team at JDE Global translated around one million words, between the three languages. All parts of the project were turned around within the necessary time frames, giving the client the translated documents that were needed to present to the tribunal for arbitration.

The final outcome and award of the arbitration is unknown since it’s still ongoing, and due to non-disclosure agreements between the two parties.
